I think this is a great event shot. The best journalistic element in this photo is that it shows a participant in the event within their own moment. He clearly does not have his mind on the parade, thinking of something else, looking at something else. That's very interesting and gives the photo a lot of personality.
This is also partly because of the somewhat awkward composition. The photo is all in all not very sharp and a big part of it is obscured by something in the foreground. I bet if you stayed on your subject a little bit longer and maybe timed the photo a little differently, you'd get a much better shot. Much of photography is really try try and select. Especially when you're shooting digital :D
